All building occupants should be familiar with the building's emergency procedures, which can be reviewed here, or printed out and kept for reference. A copy of these procedures is located at each emergency exit from tenant floors and should be reviewed periodically.
Emergency Fire Safety Team
All tenant firms are required to assemble an emergency team for each floor of their tenancy. This team is composed of the following persons:
In the event that a fire is detected or the fire alarm sounds, the Emergency Fire Safety Team will be responsible for an orderly evacuation of the building, if such is necessary.
Cross-over floors - 12th floor and 7th floor
There are two stairwells serving each floor of the building, designated the red and blue stairwells as indicated by the colored dots over the top of the respective stairway exit doors. Either stairwell may be used to evacuate in an emergency.
In the event that persons proceeding down one of the stairwells finds the way is blocked, they may enter either of the "cross-over floors" on the 12th or 7th floor and go through the elevator lobby to the stairwell on the other side of the floor.
At present, this may be done on any floor in the building, given the current configuration of those floors. However, this may change in the future for some of those floors. The 12th and 7th floors, though, have been designated the "cross-over floors", and will always be available for cross-over.
Persons Requiring Assistance
Since evacuation takes place via the stairwells, special Procedures for Persons Requiring Assistance are in effect for persons who, for any reason, are not able to use the stairs at a normal rate of travel. These procedures are important both for for the safety of those concerned, and so that other building occupants will not be hampered in their own use of the stairs.
According to the Fire Code, persons requiring assistance are personally responsible to report this fact to their Personnel or Human Resources Manager, or their Floor Warden.
If a floor contains a person requiring assistance, a main waiting area and an alternate waiting area will be designated for the floor. In the event that evacuation is required, the person(s) concerned will proceed to the waiting area. Toronto Fire Department personnel arriving at the building are given a list of persons in waiting areas in the building, and will take charge of their evacuation, if necessary.
Please note that if the problem is not near a given floor, persons in the waiting areas on that floor may not be in danger and may not be evacuated at all. Toronto Fire Services will make such decisions after arrival and briefing on the situation.
